The Toronto Star was honoured for two projects - one that dealt with the issues of spousal abuse and the other with flaws in Ontario's child protection system. In both instances, the reports sparked public debate and prompted formal government review.

The photo was taken following the Michener Foundation award ceremony at Rideau Hall on May 1, 1997.This was the 27th presentation of the the Michener Award since its inception in 1970.

Each year, the Governor General has honoured Michener Award and Fellowship winners at a Government House ceremony. Each of Roland Michener's successors has graciously adopted and maintained a personal interest in the Michener Awards Foundation and its commitment to Canadian journalism excellence.
