Paul-André Comeau, editor-in-chief of Montreal daily Le Devoir, accepts the 1989 Michener Award for meritorious public service in journalism from His Excellency, Ramon Hnatyshyn. Fraser MacDougall, Vice-President of the Michener Foundation stands in the background. The Michener trophy was presented during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall, June 19, 1990.

The newspaper was recognized for its coverage of the issues and challenges facing the Inuit people in northern Quebec in advance of a referendum on a proposal for self-government.

The Michener Award has been presented annually since 1970 when it was created under the auspices of then Governor General, Roland Michener.
