Clive Baxter was an award-winning journalist for The Financial Post which jointly with CBC-TV, earned the first Michener Award in 1970 for his reporting on the impact of the air charter revolution on the travel industry.

In 1973 at the age of 42, he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. He dedicated himself to informing others about the treatments available for brain tumours and to heightening awareness of the need for research into brain diseases. Although operations, radiation, and chemotherapy temporarily controlled the tumour, Clive Baxter died in 1980.

His widow, Cynthia, has been for several years a valued member of the board of the Michener Awards Foundation.

Mr. Baxter is shown receiving the 1970 Michener Award from the late Roland Michener, Governor General from 1967-1974. The Award was presented on November 8, 1971, at Rideau Hall, Ottawa.

The Michener Award recognizes meritorious and disinterested public service in journalism. It differs from most such awards in that it goes to the organization, not to individuals.
