Managing editor François Roy accepts the Michener Honourable Mention Award from Chief Justice Antonio Lamer on behalf of the Ottawa-based French language newspaper, Le Droit.
The newspaper was recognized for articles about the Ontario government proposal to downsize the Montfort community hospital - the only francophone hospital in urban Ontario. Massive coverage by Le Droit helped spearhead a francophone backlash that so far has succeeded in keeping some Montfort functions as well as strengthening the determination of supporters to restore it to full operation.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall, April 28, 1998.
Each year, the Governor General has honoured Michener Award and Fellowship winners at a Government House ceremony. Each of Roland Michener's successors has graciously adopted and maintained a personal interest in the Michener Awards Foundation and its commitment to Canadian journalism excellence.
