Their Excellencies Adrienne Clarkson and John Ralston Saul with the editorial staff of the Winnipeg Free Press, a finalist for the 2003 Michener Award. The photo was taken following a ceremony at Rideau Hall, Thursday, April 15, 2004.

The Free Press received a Citation of Merit for or an investigation into the 10-year-old murder conviction of James Patrick Driskell. Following the newspaper's investigation, the Manitoba government launched a full inquiry into the Driskell case.

Each year, the Governor General has honoured Michener Award and Fellowship winners at a Government House ceremony. Each of Roland Michener's successors has graciously adopted and maintained a personal interest in the Michener Awards Foundation and its commitment to Canadian journalism excellence.
