Reporter Michael McAuliffe accepts the 1995 Michener Award from Governor General Roméo LeBlanc on behalf of CBC Radio.
The CBC was honoured for an investigation into allegations of a military cover-up during the infamous Somalia affair. Mr. McAuliffe was the lead reporter whose work contributed substantially to the creation of a government inquiry - a process that the Liberal government eventually closed down.
The award was presented at a ceremony held at Rideau Hall, Ottawa, on May 6, 1996. The ceremony was hosted by Their Excellencies Roméo LeBlanc and Mrs. Diana Fowler LeBlanc.
The Michener Award is unique because of its emphasis on the impact of the journalism for the public good, plus recognition of the resources available to the entrant in an effort to put smaller and larger organization on a more equal footing.
