The Michener Award for Journalism emerged some 30 years ago from the coincidence of Governor General Roland Michener's vision of public service in journalism with the formation of a national journalists' organization. Other criteria include the resources available to the news organizations, an effort to level the playing field for small, medium and large applicants.
