Reporter Paul Wiecek accepts the 1998 Michener Citation of Merit Award from Governor General Roméo LeBlanc on behalf of the Winnipeg Free Press.

The Winnipeg daily was honoured for a series which exposed the fraud, misuse or overuse of drugs provided by unethical pharmacists and physicians abusing the national drug program for Aboriginals.

The award was presented during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall, Ottawa, April 19, 1999.

Each year, the Governor General has honoured Michener Award and Fellowship winners at a Government House ceremony. Each of Roland Michener's successors has graciously adopted and maintained a personal interest in the Michener Awards Foundation and its commitment to Canadian journalism excellence.
