Reporter Carol Alaimo receives the 1993 Michener Honourable Mention award from Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn on behalf of The St. Catharines Standard.
The Standard was honoured for an extended investigation of the municipal Hydro commission and administration that lead to a special audit of the Hydro books, the eventual dismissal of the $100,000-a-year general manager and the resignation of both the mayor and the chairman from the Hydro commission. The impact of The Standard's investigation was an important consideration for the judges.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall, May 9, 1994.
The first Michener award covered the calendar year 1970. Since then, a rich variety of news organizations have had their names inscribed on Michener trophies - print and broadcast, large and small, French and English, East and West. The Michener was also the first national journalism award open to both broadcast and print media. The award goes to the news organization itself, rather than the individual journalists involved in the story.
